Emma O’Toole

I am an artist drawn to the medium of clay. I love being a part of the transformation of clay, watching something so soft transform into my idea/thought/creativity and become a hard existing object that lasts for a very long time. That fascinates me, its fragility and resilience always a constant presence.

I graduated from Galway Mayo institute of technology (GMIT) in 2015 With an Honours Degree in fine art specialising in ceramics. After graduating I travelled around South East Asia, where I got to experience an Anagma with the Gaya studio of ceramics in Indonesia. (Anagma Is a round the clock process of feeding the kiln wood for 2 days straight and maintaining the temperature, the beautiful Ash licked, smoke fired pots as a result are absolutely worth the effort of Anagma.)

At the end of 2018 I began to focus on ceramics full time and started ‘A little piece of my heART’ my ceramics page to share my process and journey with clay. At the beginning of 2019 I took on the role of Chairperson of the forge clay studios in Galway city, where I work as a full time ceramics artist making both functional and sculptural pieces.

My work is hugely inspired by nature. Through my work I hope to portray growth, movement and expression. Trying to capture the essence of living organisms. Colour has become a very important part of this expression.

Thank you for taking the time to read about my journey with ceramics, please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions at all.
